Sermon Notes by Pastor Arthur H. Coleman Sr. For Sunday May 25,2014
Text: Phi. 3:7-15"But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. (vs8) Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.(vs9) And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:(vs10) That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; (vs11) If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. (vs12) Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. (vs13) Brethern I count not myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, (vs14) I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (vs15) Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you".
DEFINITIONS
Salvation means deliverance from sin, its penalty and effects.(2) perseveration from destruction, ruin, loss , or calamity.
Attitude is a way of thinking, acting or feeling.
Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: (vs6) Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: (vs7) But made of himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: (vs8) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new". 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Pulpit Commentary Vol.20 Pages118-119 A Commentary on Phi. 3:12-16 "The nearer we draw to Christ, the more we feel our own unworthiness. The light of Christ's holiness, manifested in the hearts of the saints, brings out into clearer light the exceeding sinfulness of sin. This very sense of imperfection urges the Christian to sustained effort. He is never satisfied with himself, therefore he always presses onward. He does not dwell with complacency on his attainments, but forgets the progress which he has made; in view of the far greater height which remains to scale, he throws himself into the work with ever-increasing energy. The crown of righteousness is laid up for all who love the appearing of the Lord. God is calling us thither, calling us upward, to higher degrees of the spiritual life now, to the perfection of that life in heaven. The prize of that upward calling is the heavenly glory. It is the end for which the Christian lives, which makes life worth having, worth living".
EXPOSITION
1.There Will Be A Manifestation Of The Driving Forces That Causes A Change Of And A New Attitude In A Spiritually Growing Disciple.
A. Regeneration-- Eze.36:26-27 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. (vs27) And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
B. Spiritual Renewal Through Transformation--- Romans 12:1-2 “I Beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (vs2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
C. The New Man---2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new".
Eph.4:22-27 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (vs23) And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;(vs24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.(vs25) Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man the truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. (vs26) Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: (vs27) Neither give place to the devil.”
2. The New Attitudes The Salvation Produces Implies A Progressing To Something Better Through A Process Of Adding Or Building That Would Proceed Throughout The Salvation Experience.-- 2 Peter 1:3-8"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:(vs4) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.(vs5) And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; (vs6)and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;(vs7) And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (vs8)For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Some Specific Attitudes That Will Develop As I Grow In My Salvation
A. An Attitude Change In My Relationship From The World To Relationship With God--- 2 Cor. 6:17-18 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.(vs18) And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” 1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.(vs16)For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. (vs17)And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
B. An Attitude Change From Immaturity To Maturity In Christ--- 1 Cor. 13:11 “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
C. An Attitude Change From Non-Contentment To Contentment In Relation To Life's Circumstances--- Phi.4: 11-13 “Not as I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. (vs12) I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (vs13) I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Hebrews 13:5-6 “ Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said,(Josh.1:5; 1Chron.28:20) I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (vs6) so that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
D. An Attitude Change From Doubts And Fears To A Full Persuasion Of Faith Of The Love Of God Toward Me --- Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things, nor things to come, (vs39)Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
E. An Attitude Change From A Selfish Individual Mindset To True Unity With My Brothers And Sisters In The Unity Of The Body Of Christ.--- 1 Cor. 1:10 “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”
F. An Attitude Change Concerning Suffering---1 Peter 4:1-2 “FORASMUCH then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; (vs2) That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.”
G. An Attitude Change Concerning My Place And Responsibilities In The Church Of The Lord Jesus Christ---Ephesians 2:19-22 “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;(vs20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; (vs21) In whom all the building fitly framed together growth unto an holy temple in the Lord: (vs22) In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”
