Subtopic: God’s Overshadowing Providence/”Lord Let Me Hide In Thee”

Sermon Notes By Pastor Arthur H. Coleman Sr For Sunday February 23, 2014

Text: Psalm 91:1-7 “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (vs2) I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (vs3) Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. (vs4) He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. (vs5) Thou shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor the arrow that flieth by day; (vs6) Nor the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. (vs7) A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

St. Matthew 11:28-30 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (vs29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (vs30) For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

PREMISE

“The rest, peace and security that we seek is only found in that “secret place of the most High” as we “abide under the shadow of the Almighty”, inasmuch as we take upon us the yoke of Christ which is the yoke of Christian living, Christian duty,  and Christian affliction, which gives us the full knowledge of Christ , which in turn  causes us to experience the ease of the yoke, the lightness of the burden and the resting place of His security and peace.---AHC.

Subtopic: " My Desired Result"

Text: St. Matt. 7:24-27: "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:(vs25) And the rain descended and the floods came,  and the winds blew: and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.(vs26) and everyone that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand.(vs27)And the rain decended, and the floods came and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it".

PREMISE

The Pulpit Commentary,Vol.15 ,Pages 297-298, a Homily Comment on St. Matthew 7:24-27. "LIVING IS BUILDING-- Every man is building himself a house, for all life-work is putting together of a habitation in which the worker will have to dwell. Some build feebly and set up but slight structures, mere huts and shanties. Others work with more ambitious designs,  and will make themselves spacious mansions, gorgeous palaces, or massive castles. Whatever a man builds, in that he must dwell. We cannot get away from the results of our own life-work. These will either become a shelter to protect us or a ruin to fall about our heads.

Subtopic: Are You Committed?

Text: St. Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: (vs14) Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

DEFINITIONS

To Commit means to handover for safekeeping or to deliver to. Entrust means to commit with trust and confidence.

PREMISE

"The More Committed We Are The More Committed We Become" Pastor A.H. Coleman Sr.

The Pulpit Commentary, Vol.15, Pages 296-297, a comment on St. Matt.7:13-14. 1. "THE STRAIGHTNESS OF THE FIRST GATE. No one can become a Christian without an effort. We do not drift into the kingdom, nor do we grow up in it unconsciously. Even the children of Christian homes need to come to decision and make a deliberate choice. Moreover, there are sins to be repented of, evil habits to be renounced; pride must be humbled, and the simple trust of a little child attained. We become Christians by complete surrender to Christ. 2. THE WIDTH OF THE SECOND GATE. We do not need to make any choice of evil. Evil is all around us. We have but to let ourselves go, and we shall be swept through the wide gate. This is so very wide that we cannot miss it if we merely permit ourselves to go with the crowd.

Subtopic : Coming To Terms With My Discipleship: Saying Yes To the Will Of God

Sermon Notes By Pastor Arthur H. Coleman Sr. For Sunday October 14, 2012

Text St. Matt.16:24-26 "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.(vs25) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.(vs26)For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"

PREMISE

The Pulpit Commentary,Vol.15, Page 154, A comment on St.Matt.16:24 " The Great Condition-The heart-searching truths of this verse are too often neglected in popular presentations of the gospel. We have a Christianity made easy as an accommodation to an age which loves personal comfort. Not only is this unfaithful to the truth, no part of which we have any right to keep back; it is most foolish and shortsighted. It prepares for a surprising disappointment when the inevitable facts are discovered; and it does not really attract. A religion of sweet-meats is sickening. There is that in the better nature of man which responds to the doctrine of the cross; it is the mistake of the lower method that it only appeals to the selfish desire of personal safety, and therefore does not awaken the better nature at all. Christ sets the example of the higher and truer method; he does not shun to set before us the dangers and difficulties of the Christian course. If we meet them we cannot say we have not been warned.
