Sermon Notes By Pastor Arthur H. Coleman Sr. For Sunday November 23, 2014
Text: Isaiah 10:27 “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”
1 John 2:26-27 “These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. (vs27) But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”
PREMISE
The Pulpit Commentary, Vol.22, Page 60; a comment on 1 John 2:27 ---THE OBLIGATION OF THIS BLESSING---“More fully stated this is the obligation which is inseparable from the possession of this anointing from the Holy One. The context clearly shows that the person spoken of in verses 27 and 28 is the Lord Jesus Christ. The exhortation to abide in him is based on the assurance that the anointing which they had received abode in them(ver.27). The “in him” must not be toned down to his doctrine, or his system, or anything of that kind. “In him” by the exercise of the faith of the heart, by the attachment of holy love, by intimate and reverent communion in him, and by participation in his life and spirit. Thus we are to abide in him(cf. St. John 15:4-7).Thus we can learn; first that the “illumination of the Holy Spirit is indispensable to a clear and correct apprehension of the great truths of Christianity.” Cudsworth says “words and syllables which are but dead things, cannot possibly convey the living notions of heavenly truths to us. The secret mysteries of a Divine life, of a new nature, of Christ formed in our hearts, they cannot be written or spoken; language and expressions cannot reach them; neither can they be ever truly understood, except the soul itself be kindled from within, and awakened into the life of them.”(cf.1 Corinthians 2:10-13).Second The “anointing from the Holy One”—the influence and presence of the Holy Spirit within us---is a preservative against seductions of error. Third and finally; the possession of this Divine preservative is not an encouragement to presumption, but a reason for perseverance, inasmuch as the anointing which they received of Christ abode in them, St John exhorts his readers to “abide in him”.
THE ANOINTING IS GOD’S ENABLING POWER THAT ACCOMPANIES THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST WHICH AND CAUSES ME TO BE A WITNESS
To Anoint--- means from a biblical standpoint the putting on of oil in a ceremony as a sign of consecration to an office or to make sacred. (2) Served the purpose of dedicating things or persons to God; with the oil symbolizing the Holy Spirit in setting apart and empowering for service to God. Thus the anointing is divine consecration and sanctification by and of God’s Holy Ghost power to give a special enablement for a particular work to a specific call of God.
EXPOSITION
1.THE ANOINTING IS GOD’S ENABLING POWER THAT ACCOMPANIES THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST WHICH AND CAUSES ME TO BE A WITNESS---Acts 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
2. THE ANOINTING GIVES US POWER AND COURAGE TO REBUKE AND STAND AGAINST SIN---Micah 3:8 “But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgressions, and to Israel his sin.”
3. THE ANOINTING IS MIGHTIER THAN ANY PHYSICAL FORCE---Zechariah 4:6 “Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.”
4.THE ANOINTING IS THE DIVINE TEACHER THAT GIVES US SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE AND DISCERNMENT---1 Corinthians 2:9-13 “But as it is written,(Isa.64:4) Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (vs10) But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. (vs11) For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (vs12) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (vs13) Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
5.WE HAVE BEEN ANOINTED TO REACH A DEEPER LIFE IN CHRIST AND ATTAIN COMPLETE SPIRITUAL FULLNESS---Ephesians 3:16-19 “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; (vs17) That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (vs18) May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; (vs19) And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
6.WE HAVE BEEN ANOINTED TO BE BOLD CHRISTIAN SOLIDERS---Ephesians 6:10-18 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. (vs11) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (vs12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (vs13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. (vs14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; (vs15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; (vs16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.(vs17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (vs18) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
7. WE HAVE BEEN ANOINTED TO BE GOD’S SPECIAL PEOPLE---1 Peter 2:9-10 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: (vs10) Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”
